Choosing the right yacht is one of the most important decisions when planning a private event in Fort Lauderdale — and it starts with your guest count. Sun Dream Yacht Charters operates three luxury vessels on the Intracoastal Waterway, each designed to accommodate a different range of group sizes and event styles. The m/y Sun Dream (137 ft) accommodates 15 to 149 guests, the m/y Caprice (130 ft) accommodates 75 to 329 guests, and the m/y Catalina (130 ft) accommodates up to 516 guests. Whether you're planning an intimate executive dinner, a wedding reception, or a large corporate celebration, this guide will help you match your event to the right vessel — and what to consider beyond guest count.

Planning a private event on the water is exciting — but before you choose a menu or pick a playlist, the most important decision is which yacht fits your group. Get that right and everything else falls into place.

Sun Dream Yacht Charters has operated on Fort Lauderdale's Intracoastal Waterway since 1979. Our fleet of three luxury yachts covers events from intimate gatherings to large-scale celebrations. Here's how to match your event to the right vessel.

Start With Your Guest Count

Guest count is the best place to start, but it isn’t the only factor. Dining style, dancing, entertainment, décor and the amount of room you want guests to have for mingling can all affect which yacht is the best fit.

Yacht

Guest Capacity

Best Suited For

m/y Sun Dream

15–149

Smaller and midsize weddings, corporate events, birthdays and private celebrations

m/y Caprice

75–329

Midsize and larger events with more room for dining, dancing and entertaining

m/y Catalina

Up to 516

Large corporate events, weddings and major celebrations

Capacity is not the same as ideal event size. A yacht that can legally accommodate a certain number of guests may not necessarily be the best choice for every event at that number. Dining style, entertainment, dancing and your preferred layout all affect how much space your group will need.

Choosing the Right Yacht Size for an Event: Guest Count Guide

Maximum capacity is helpful, but most event planners really want to know something more practical: Which yacht should I consider for the number of guests I expect?

The answer depends not only on guest count, but also on dining style, dancing, entertainment, décor and how much room you want guests to have for mingling. Two events with exactly the same number of guests can have very different space requirements.

Here are some general guidelines to help you begin narrowing down the options.

Around 15–74 Guests

For groups of approximately 15 to 74 guests, the m/y Sun Dream is typically the first yacht to consider. It provides plenty of room for smaller private events while giving guests access to both indoor and outdoor spaces for dining, conversation and waterfront views.

Around 75–100 Guests

For approximately 75 to 100 guests, both the Sun Dream and Caprice may be options.

At this size, the decision often depends less on maximum capacity and more on how you plan to use the yacht. A reception-style corporate event, for example, may have very different space requirements from a wedding with dining, entertainment and a dance floor.

Your Charter Specialist can compare the layouts and help determine which yacht is the better fit.

Around 100–125 Guests

Groups in the 100-to-125 range may also have more than one yacht option.

The Sun Dream or Caprice may work depending on the type of event, dining plans, entertainment and the amount of space you would like guests to have throughout the celebration.

As guest count increases, it becomes increasingly important to consider more than the yacht's stated capacity. Guest flow, seating, dancing and entertainment all play a role in creating a comfortable event.

Around 125–150 Guests

For groups in this range, we generally recommend the Caprice or Catalina.

Both provide additional flexibility for dining, dancing, entertainment and guest flow, which can be especially important as an event approaches 150 guests.

Your Charter Specialist can help determine which yacht is the better fit based on the type of event and how you plan to use the space.

Around 150–200 Guests

For approximately 150 to 200 guests, we generally recommend the Caprice or Catalina. At this size, both yachts provide additional room for dining, entertainment, dancing and guest circulation. Your Charter Specialist can compare the layouts based on your final guest count and how you plan to use the event spaces.

Around 200–300 Guests

For events with approximately 200 to 300 guests, the Caprice or Catalina are generally the yachts to consider.

The right choice will depend on your final guest count as well as your plans for dining, entertainment, dancing and other event elements. Companies hosting large receptions, for example, may have different layout priorities than a wedding or formal celebration with extensive seating.

More Than 300 Guests

For very large events, the Catalina provides the greatest capacity in the Sun Dream fleet, accommodating up to 516 guests.

Its larger event spaces make it particularly well suited to large corporate gatherings, weddings and major celebrations requiring substantial room for guests, dining and entertainment.

These guest-count ranges are planning guidelines rather than rigid rules. The best yacht for your event depends on both the number of guests and the experience you want to create. Your Charter Specialist can help you compare the yachts and recommend the option that best fits your event.

Beyond Guest Count: What Else Affects Yacht Selection?

Guest count is the starting point, but it is not the only thing that determines which yacht will work best for your event. The way you plan to use the space can be just as important as the number of people attending.

Dining Style

A buffet, seated meal, food stations and cocktail-style reception all use space differently.

A seated dinner requires more room for tables and guest circulation, while a reception-style event may allow for more flexibility and mingling. Your dining plans can therefore affect which yacht feels most comfortable for your group.

Dancing and Entertainment

If dancing is an important part of your event, you will want to consider how much space should be reserved for the dance floor.

The same is true for DJs, live musicians, presentations, audiovisual equipment or other entertainment. An event with extensive entertainment needs may benefit from a larger yacht even if the guest count technically fits on a smaller one.

Cocktail-Style vs. Dinner Events

A networking reception for 100 guests can have very different space needs from a wedding reception for the same number of people.

Cocktail-style events often emphasize open space for conversation and movement, while dinner events require more seating and structured layouts.

The type of event matters just as much as the number of guests.

Indoor and Outdoor Space

All three Sun Dream yachts offer both indoor and outdoor areas, but the balance of those spaces differs from vessel to vessel.

Some groups prioritize open-air deck space and waterfront views, while others want more climate-controlled indoor space for dining, presentations or entertainment.

Think about where you expect your guests to spend most of the event.

Décor and Event Setup

Large floral installations, specialty décor, photo areas, staging and other event elements can all take up valuable floor space.

If you are planning an event with substantial décor or multiple focal areas, choosing a yacht with additional room may create a more comfortable overall layout.

Type of Event

A wedding, corporate reception, birthday celebration and Quinceañera can each require a different setup, even with the same guest count.

A corporate event may emphasize networking and presentations. A wedding may need dining, dancing and space for special moments. A birthday or family celebration may call for a more relaxed layout.

This is why there is no single “right yacht” based on guest count alone.

Your Charter Specialist can look at the complete picture — guest count, dining, entertainment, décor and event style — and recommend the yacht that best supports the experience you want to create.
